Teen Celebrini captains Canada and has Crosby for company at world hockey champs, US defends title
The 19-year-old San Jose Sharks center becomes Canada’s youngest captain as Sidney Crosby returns for his fourth world championship.
On Friday, the world hockey championship opens in Zurich and Fribourg with Macklin Celebrini, the 19-year-old San Jose Sharks star, serving as Canada's youngest-ever captain.
Celebrini's record-breaking 115-point season earned him a spot on the Canadian squad after they secured silver at this year's Milan Cortina Olympics, joining 35-year-old alternate captains John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ryan O'Reilly of the Nashville Predators.
The United States sets out to retain the trophy it won in 2025 for the first time in 92 years, led by captain Justin Faulk of the Detroit Red Wings, though Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres is absent.
Canada competes in Group B in Fribourg, while the United States headlines Group A in Zurich, with the top four teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals.
Canada, the most successful nation at the worlds with 28 titles, last won the trophy in 2023; the tournament concludes with the final and bronze-medal games scheduled for May 31.
