Teachers Unions Announce AI Safety Agreement with Microsoft

- On Wednesday, the American Federation of Teachers and the United Federation of Teachers announced a legally enforceable National AI Safety and Privacy Standard with Microsoft, described as a "first of its kind" agreement.
- Following recent moratoriums on student-facing AI tools in New York City Public Schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District, AFT President Randi Weingarten stated federal laws "never envisioned the advent of AI."
- Under the agreement, Microsoft committed to ten principles including prohibiting student or educator data from training AI models and banning AI "companions," with protections available to districts starting November 1.
- Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith emphasized the agreement has "teeth," including audit and legal enforcement provisions, allowing districts to pause or discontinue AI deployment if the company breaches the contract.
- Negotiations are ongoing with Anthropic and OpenAI to adopt these same standards for their education products, as AFT President Randi Weingarten aims to establish the framework as an industry standard nationwide.
