TB Cases Confirmed in UK Outbreak - 'Common' Symptoms to Spot
Amazon is conducting expanded NHS screening after 10 employees tested positive for non-infectious tuberculosis, amid a 13% rise in TB cases across England in 2024, UKHSA said.
Last year, Amazon confirmed 10 workers at its Coventry fulfilment centre tested positive for TB in September, describing the cases as non-contagious.
UKHSA data show a 13 per cent rise in Tuberculosis cases across England in 2024, with the disease spreading when people inhale droplets after prolonged close contact.
The NHS warns common symptoms include persistent cough, fatigue, high temperature, reduced appetite and weight loss, with a cough lasting more than three weeks and coughing up blood as key warning signs.
Amazon said NHS staff attended this week for blood tests and it is running expanded screening; a company representative said, 'The small number of individuals affected by tuberculosis are responding well to treatment and are no longer infectious, so pose no onward risk'.
NHS guidance notes treatment for TB typically requires antibiotics for around six months and the BCG vaccine is recommended for some higher-risk groups, reflecting national vaccination programme impacts.
