Rookie Cade Klubnik Leads 2 Scoring Drives After Geno Smith Is Scratched in Jets’ 24-16 Loss to Bucs
Klubnik completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards and helped New York score on both of his drives.
On Friday night, rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik led the New York Jets on two scoring drives in their preseason opener, but the team fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-16 at MetLife Stadium.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn started Klubnik after deciding to rest Geno Smith due to a sore foot, a precautionary measure following the quarterback's injury during Wednesday's joint practice.
Klubnik guided the offense to a 10-0 lead, completing 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards while Braelon Allen capped a drive with a 31-yard touchdown dash.
Replacing Klubnik, backup Bailey Zappe threw two interceptions, including a pick-6 returned by undrafted rookie Ayden Garnes, allowing the Buccaneers to rally for the 24-16 victory.
The Buccaneers host Kansas City on August 22, while the Jets travel to Pittsburgh on August 21 for their next preseason matchups.
