Vijay's Magic Continues in Tamil Nadu, TVK Wins Both Bypolls to Boost Numbers in Assembly
On Friday, officials began counting votes for by-elections in Tamil Nadu's Dharapuram Assembly and Madurantakam Assembly constituencies, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidates leading in both segments.
The by-elections were necessitated after incumbent legislators Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned their seats to join the TVK, forcing voters back to the polls barely six months after the general election.
In Dharapuram, TVK candidate Sathyabama leads All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nominee K Bhanumathi by 724 votes after five rounds; in Madurantakam, Kumaravel maintains a 1,607-vote lead after the second round.
Separately, ruling All India NR Congress candidate Ashok Anand leads the Thattanchavady Assembly segment in Puducherry; for the Vijay-led TVK regime, winning these seats is vital to secure a working majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
The Election Commission expects to complete the process by October 11. Meanwhile, the AIADMK, which ruled Tamil Nadu for over three decades, faces intense pressure to demonstrate relevance and achieve an electoral comeback.
