Talen Energy and Amazon sign nuclear power deal to fuel data centers
- On June 7, Talen Energy signed a power purchase agreement to supply 1,920 MW of nuclear power to Amazon's Pennsylvania data centers through 2042.
- This agreement follows Amazon's purchase of the nearby Cumulus data center in March 2024 and replaces a previous colocation deal that faced regulatory opposition.
- The PPA shifts to a front-of-the-meter model where energy is delivered to the grid, enhancing flexibility and eliminating the need for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval.
- Talen anticipates earning approximately $18 billion throughout the duration of the contract, which also includes initiatives to investigate small modular reactors and increase the Susquehanna plant’s capacity, according to CEO Mac McFarland.
- This deal supports Amazon's $20 billion investment to build multiple cloud computing and AI campuses across Pennsylvania, indicating significant expansion in the region’s tech infrastructure.
