Take a hike on New Year's Day at state parks
More than a dozen Alabama State Parks offer guided and self-guided hikes free with daily admission to promote health and celebrate the Year of Alabama Trails.
- On Jan. 1, Alabama State Parks will again offer First Day Hikes with guided outings at more than a dozen state parks as part of a campaign with America's State Parks Foundation.
- To promote healthier habits, organizers say the First Day Hikes campaign encourages family recreation and fitness while highlighting The Year of Alabama Trails led by the Alabama Tourism Department.
- Local hike leaders reported, `We have several volunteers who have signed up to lead free, guided hikes here at Turkey Mountain and you can show up and be a part of those. We are going to be leading hikes every 30 minutes. Those will be about two-and-a-half mile hikes that will take about an hour and a half or so`, said Howell.
- For participants, organizers note First Day Hikes are free with daily Alabama State Park admission, and advance registration offers real-time updates while lodging can be booked through the Alapark.com reservation portal.
- Nationwide context shows First Day Hikes highlight America's 250th anniversary in 2026, but winter weather could disrupt plans and hike leaders will contact registered participants if canceled.
