Taco Bell sales recover in the US after summer cyclospora outbreak
Same-store sales fell 4% in the quarter, but Yum Brands said Taco Bell has outpaced the quick-service restaurant industry since late September.
On Tuesday, Yum Brands CEO Chris Turner reported that Taco Bell sales are rebounding following a cyclospora outbreak that impacted the chain earlier this year.
The CDC linked a widespread cyclospora outbreak earlier this year to contaminated iceberg lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in five states.
Taco Bell saw a 4% drop in same-store sales during the July-September period, while the Taco Bell division recorded a 2% system sales slump from outbreak losses.
To drive engagement, the brand partnered with singer-songwriter Peso Pluma, artist Olivia Rodrigo, and comedian Kevin Hart, while weekly loyalty deals helped bring back core users.
Turner remains confident that value offerings and international expansion will lead Taco Bell to a full recovery through 2027, viewing the brand as a growth engine.
