SUWAIDA CITY AND PROVINCE, SYRIA, JUL 17 – The ceasefire follows clashes that killed over 370 people and includes transfer of security to Druze leaders amid Israeli strikes targeting Syrian forces, officials said.

  • This week, the Syrian army began withdrawing from Suwayda city, following two days of deadly clashes, and opened space for Israeli intervention, state media said.
  • According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, sectarian clashes began on Sunday, killing over 350 people, prompting Syrian forces to oversee a ceasefire in Suwayda.
  • Reportedly, Israeli planes targeted general security cars and killed three personnel, while US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said `calling on the Syrian government to withdraw their military`.
  • Following the withdrawal, Ahmed al-Sharaa said security responsibility will transfer to religious elders and local factions, and state media said convoys withdrew overnight in line with the ceasefire.
  • However, its durability remained unclear after its announcement, despite US, Turkish, and Arab mediation, highlighting ongoing instability in Suwaida.
