Syria denies reports of handover of Uyghurs as FM visits China
A Syrian foreign ministry has denied reports that Damascus has agreed to hand over hundreds of foreign fighters from China's Muslim Uyghur minority to Beijing, as Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani made his first visit to the country. The new Syrian authorities will deliver to China jihadists from the Uighur Muslim minority, said to the AFP on Monday, 17 November, two sources, governmental and diplomatic, the latter stating that 400 fighters are involved.
While several sources close to the Syrian government claim that Damascus is about to transfer to China jihadist Uyghur fighters present on its territory, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denies. A controversy that is taking place at a time when Beijing and Damascus are strengthening their security cooperation, on the background of geopolitical issues that cross the Middle East and Central Asia.
