Syria delays parliamentary vote in Sweida after sectarian violence
Parliamentary elections in three provinces are postponed due to ongoing security challenges and the need to ensure fair representation, with seats reserved until safe conditions return.
- Syria's interim authorities, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, postponed the September 15-20 transitional parliament elections in Sweida, Raqqa, and al-Hasakah due to security issues.
- The delay follows deadly sectarian clashes in July between Druze militias and government-backed Sunni Bedouins in Sweida, while Kurdish forces control Raqqa and al-Hasakah, complicating election logistics.
- Following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, the new leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa disbanded the former parliament from the Assad era and introduced a provisional constitution to guide the country through a five-year transitional phase.
- Nawar Najmeh, electoral commission spokesman, said elections only occur in state-controlled areas and seats for the three provinces will be reserved until conditions improve.
- The postponement signals ongoing instability and challenges in Syria’s north and south, highlighting strained ceasefires and contested control that impede fair representation.
