Second man who felled Sycamore Gap tree released

He was one of two men convicted of criminal damage after the landmark was cut down in less than three minutes, prosecutors said.

  • Daniel Graham, 41, from Cumbria, has been released from prison on licence after serving 16 months plus time spent on remand for his role in felling the iconic Sycamore Gap tree.
  • Newcastle Crown Court heard during their trial how the pair engaged in a "moronic mission" to fell the landmark, travelling more than 40 minutes from their homes in Cumbria in September 2023.
  • Graham and former friend Adam Carruthers were each sentenced to four years and three months in July 2025 for causing criminal damage to the tree and Hadrian's Wall; Carruthers was released in April.
  • A Ministry of Justice spokesperson called the felling a "disgraceful crime," stating offenders released on licence face strict conditions and can be returned to prison immediately if they breach them.
  • Three years after the felling, the National Trust revealed shoots around the surviving stump have grown to between two and three feet tall, with saplings propagated as 'Trees of Hope' planted nationwide.
