Sweltering Midwest heat cancels outdoor plans as cooling centers open and the East braces
Cooling centers opened as extreme heat forced cancellations and raised heat index values above 100 degrees, officials said.
On Monday, a prolonged heat wave disrupted the Midwest, forcing camp programs to reschedule and canceling outdoor activities including Michigan farmers markets and Minnesota drive-in theaters.
Meteorologist Scott Kleebauer reported that heat index values are expected to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit as extreme conditions move through the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, and into the Northeast.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison closed 23 buildings starting Tuesday and relocated summer classes, while Flint, Michigan, activated four cooling centers to assist residents during the extreme heat.
Dr. Roy Elrod, chief of staff at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, warned that heat-related injuries can occur within minutes without proper hydration and sun avoidance during peak hours.
This heat wave coincides with the Fourth of July holiday week, when meteorologist Scott Kleebauer noted many residents are traveling and potentially unprepared for dangerous weather conditions.
