Swedish manufacturer SAAB says 10,000 jobs could land in Canada

Saab's plan includes technology transfer and research centers, aiming to create 10,000 jobs through local assembly and component supply in Canada, supporting both RCAF and Ukraine.

  • On Thursday, Saab AB chief executive officer Micael Johansson confirmed talks with the federal government and Bombardier Inc. to licence-build the Gripen in Canada, saying it could create 10,000 jobs and a research network for aircraft development.
  • Sweden's small size limits domestic Gripen output, and Saab intensified its search last month after Ukraine and Sweden signed a letter of intent for 100 to 150 Gripen E series jets.
  • With Bombardier's Montreal and Toronto Pearson plants near capacity, Saab and Bombardier are examining Canadian sites and considering a potential new factory, with talks continuing Nov. 18 to Nov. 20 during the royal visit by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
  • Canada has ordered 88 F-35s but paid for only 16, and a senior Ottawa source warned Mr. Carney fears U.S. retaliation if the rest is cancelled amid dual-fleet costs.
  • Johansson said Canada could build Gripens for both Ukraine and the Royal Canadian Air Force, and Saab cited ties to CAE Inc. and IMP Group supporting planned research and development centres.
