Swedish court says Google is to pay $1.5 billion to Klarna in antitrust damages
The court said Google unlawfully favored its own shopping service and rejected most of PriceRunner’s claim, making the award Sweden’s largest competition damages case.
- On Wednesday, the Stockholm Patent and Market Court ruled that Google must pay approximately $1.5 billion in antitrust damages to PriceRunner, finding the tech giant had "for many years, unlawfully favoured its own price comparison service."
- PriceRunner filed its 2022 lawsuit after the European Union General Court upheld findings that Google breached antitrust laws by manipulating search results to favor its own comparison shopping service over competitors.
- Judge Linda Kullberg stated the damages are "without doubt the largest ever decided in a Swedish competition case," while rejecting Google's argument that abuse ended in 2017, finding it continued until 2023.
- Dan Greaves, head of communications and policy at Klarna, said the ruling "supports a healthier, more competitive market for the way people compare products and services," validating the fintech firm's acquisition of PriceRunner.
- A Google spokesman told AFP the company "don't agree with the court's decision" and is reviewing legal options, maintaining that changes to shopping ads in 2017 are "working successfully.
