Suspect in Racist Paris Shooting Transferred to Psychiatric Unit, Had Drugs in His System
Prosecutors said the 39-year-old suspect will be observed for up to 48 hours to determine whether he is fit for questioning.
- On Sunday, France's National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office suspended police custody of 39-year-old suspect Kevin T., transferring him to a psychiatric unit for a 48-hour observation period to assess his fitness for further interrogation.
- The suspect opened fire from a vehicle on Friday, October 23, in Trappes and La Verrière, killing 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi and wounding five others, including a 12-year-old girl, before police arrested him in nearby Coignières.
- Investigators discovered a submachine gun, tear gas, and booby-trapped gas cylinders at the suspect's home, alongside a copy of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf; he reportedly told police he sought to "avenge" shops looted on October 17.
- President Emmanuel Macron condemned the shooting as a "racist terrorist attack," describing it as a "turning point" for the Republic, while hundreds gathered in Trappes on Saturday to pay tribute to the victims and demand justice.
- Lawyer Yassine Bouzrou, representing the family of Bossio Wangi, called the decision to end formal detention "very rare" and warned of a "worrying pattern" where far-right perpetrators' mental state is questioned to deflect from ideological motives.

Suspect in Paris shooting moved to police psychiatric unit
French authorities have transferred to a psychiatric unit a man suspected of a gun attack in the Paris suburbs that killed one person and wounded five, prosecutors said Sunday. The 39-year-old man, identified as Kevin T., is reportedly suffering from schizophrenia.
Experts will determine whether the man is fit to continue his interrogation.
The alleged perpetrator of Friday's racist mobile attack in Yvelines, a soldier with one dead and five wounded, Kévin T., was diagnosed with schizophrenia and followed a medical treatment, according to a source close to the file, which confirms a disclosure of the LCI post, reports AFP.
The detention of the suspect in a shooting near Paris has been lifted for psychiatric reasons, the anti-terrorism department of the French Public Prosecution Service reports. A psychiatric examination is now taking place. The violence on Friday resulted in one death and five people were injured.
Many associations, including the Ligue des droits de l'Homme and SOS Racisme, are calling for rallies in several cities in France on Monday, following the racist terrorist attack in Trappes on Friday.
