Man Charged with Murder in Killing of Culver CityBus Driver
The complaint says Zayas knew Rodriguez was on duty and could face life in prison without parole if convicted.
- On Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman charged 55-year-old Jose Antonio Zayas with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Culver CityBus driver Bruce Rodriguez, who was killed on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Mar Vista.
- After Rodriguez was unable to stop the bus due to heavy traffic on South Centinela Avenue, Zayas allegedly fired multiple times, killing the driver. The suspect then fled on a bicycle taken from the bus front rack, police said.
- The Gang and Narcotics Division FBI Task Force arrested Zayas near Motor Avenue on Friday, October 2, 2026, without incident. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole for murder with special allegations of killing transportation personnel and felon firearm possession.
- Hundreds attended a Saturday vigil honoring the 42-year-old victim, a father of two who served Culver City as a bus driver for 12 years. District Attorney Hochman said Wednesday, "Bruce Rodriguez was a valued colleague, a beloved father and husband."
- Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park urged local transit agencies to strengthen safety measures, including better radios and panic buttons for drivers, to protect operators from dangerous passengers. The shooting has renewed concerns about transit worker safety countywide.
