Survivor of Belleville, Ont., synagogue shooting cites need for extensive security
The survivor says bullet-resistant glass, safe rooms and armed security are needed because a federal grant would not cover the full cost.
On Monday, Shima Vigodda, vice-president of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ont., called for enhanced security measures following the synagogue's September shooting.
Before the attack, the synagogue focused on modest improvements like burglar alarms and replacing broken windows, which the existing federal program adequately covered.
Vigodda proposed installing bullet-resistant glass, replacing interior and exterior doors, and building a secure safe room. He also urged installation of fencing and permanent armed police or security personnel on site.
These comprehensive measures are necessary to ensure physical safety of congregants and effectively deter would-be attackers, Vigodda stated. The synagogue's leadership views such site hardening as critical to preventing future tragedies.
Although a federal program exists to assist places of worship, it falls short of covering the expensive site improvements now required. The Sons of Jacob Synagogue continues to evaluate funding options to secure the facility.
