Heatwave forecast and health alerts issued as temperatures set to hit 30C
The alert warns of increased risks to vulnerable people and possible strain on health and social care services as temperatures reach 31C.
The UK Health Security Agency issued a 'Yellow' heat-health alert for Surrey from 9am on Friday, May 22, until 5pm on Wednesday, May 27, warning of risks to vulnerable people.
Met Office forecasts for Surrey have risen considerably, with back-to-back days of 30C heat now expected as the end of May turns unseasonably hot, contrasting with earlier predictions of around 25C.
The Bank Holiday weekend begins Saturday with 19C heats, warming to 26C by midday Sunday, before peaking at 31C on Monday, May 25, according to Met Office projections.
Warning of greater risk to life for vulnerable residents, the UKHSA cited Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson, who noted, "The weather later this week will feel like a marked contrast from recent days."
Conditions will turn unsettled later Friday and into Saturday with a mix of cloud, showers, and potential thundery rain, though temperatures should remain warm or very warm through the weekend.
