Supermarket shoppers warned they still risk £100 parking fines despite rule change
Select Car Leasing warns that drivers can still face charges of up to £100 even with five-minute grace periods and appeal rights.
Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, warned that drivers face fines of up to £100 for parking at closed supermarkets, as operators frequently penalize motorists who leave vehicles outside retail hours.
Private supermarket car parks operate on private land, using Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras to monitor vehicles and enforce rules through Parking Charge Notices ranging from £40 to £100.
Under a new code of practice, drivers receive a guaranteed five minutes to decide whether to park and ten minutes to leave; however, Conway noted these grace periods do not change the rules set by car parks.
If motorists believe they have been fined unfairly, Conway suggests it is always worth submitting appeals, as fines can be scrapped for honest mistakes if drivers carefully check signage.
Across England, Scotland, and Wales, government rules designed to curb unfair charges have not stopped the £100 maximum penalty, as operators maintain these charges despite calls to cap parking fines at £50.
