Sundowns rocked in final league game to leave Pirates within reach of historic PSL title
TS Galaxy’s win leaves Orlando Pirates needing one more victory to secure their first league title in 14 years, with goal difference still in their favor.
On Tuesday night, Orlando Pirates moved within one win of the Betway Premiership title after Mamelodi Sundowns fell 3-2 to TS Galaxy in Mbombela.
Sundowns finished their league season early to prepare for the CAF Champions League final against Morocco's AS FAR, with coach Miguel Cardoso reshuffling his XI due to suspensions and injuries.
Victor Letsoalo's seventh-minute penalty and Sedwyn George's 18th-minute goal gave Galaxy a 2-0 lead within 18 minutes; Brayan León scored twice to level at 2-2 before halftime.
A win over Durban City on Saturday at Orlando Amstel Arena would clinch the championship for Pirates, giving them their first title in 14 years and denying Sundowns a ninth consecutive crown.
This result effectively ends Sundowns' eight-year domestic dominance, positioning Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou for a potential domestic treble after winning the MTN8 and Carling Knockout.
