Cluster of Quakes Strike Sonoma County

A shallow 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck east Sonoma County with two aftershocks; no major damage reported and over 6 million people felt light shaking, USGS said.

  • A cluster of earthquakes rattled Sonoma County on Sunday, including a magnitude 4.0 quake near Glen Ellen and Santa Rosa at about 3:30 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said.
  • USGS data show the temblors occurred at about 1.1–1.2 miles depth, with California and Nevada averaging 25 magnitude 4.0–5.0 quakes annually.
  • Several aftershocks followed, including 3.1 and 3.4 magnitudes at about 3:38 p.m. and just before 4:05 p.m., with the 3.4 centered near Kenwood about 4.3 miles west-southwest.
  • The USGS estimated more than 6 million people experienced weak to light shaking, with some residents within less than 2 miles reporting moderate shaking and light local damage but no major injuries.
  • Shake Alert messages showed an initial 4.9 magnitude for San Francisco, while the U.S. Geological Survey revised it from 4.9 to 4.2 then 4.0 after a December 4 false alarm flagged by Quakebot.
