Sun Life finds single leukemia claim neared $8M as $1M+ bills surge
Blood cancers drove the highest multimillion-dollar claims, and GLP-1-related claims rose 24% as comorbidities and long hospital stays pushed costs higher.
On Thursday, Sun Life released its annual High-Cost Claims and Injectable Drug Trends report, revealing that million-dollar medical claims increased in frequency by 46% between 2022 and 2026.
Secondary health conditions, long hospitalizations, and specialized injectable drugs are the primary drivers of claims exceeding $3 million, according to the report.
Blood cancers averaged $5.45 million in 2025, with one leukemia patient claim reaching nearly $8 million; Elevidys gene therapy averaged $3.6 million.
Claims involving GLP-1s increased 24% over the past year, while orthopedic conditions have recently reached million-dollar levels, suggesting rising treatment severity.
Jennifer Collier, president of Health and Risk Solutions at Sun Life, stated, "We have a real opportunity to help people achieve meaningful, improved health outcomes by prioritizing whole-person care.
