Summerland senior centre evacuees are 'safe and settled,' says Interior Health
Interior Health said the seniors are safe and settled after staff and medical teams moved them to care homes across the Okanagan.
On Friday, Aug. 7, The Bald Range Wildfire forced the evacuation of almost 20,000 people from Summerland, including 238 seniors relocated from two care homes across the Okanagan.
Interior Health and West Coast Seniors Housing evacuated 48 residents from Andrew Pavillion and 190 residents from Summerland Seniors Village, navigating a dynamic situation with limited planning time.
Medical staff followed residents to new locations to maintain continuity of care, while Interior Health deployed additional personnel and established a dedicated call centre on Saturday, Aug. 9, for families.
All seniors are now relocated to care homes across the Okanagan, with some returning to their families; Interior Health noted residents are currently safe and settled.
Once evacuation orders are rescinded, Interior Health will plan to return residents to their homes, while Summerland Chief Administrative Officer Graham Statt reported no knowledge of damage to care home facilities as of Friday.
