ESSEX, UK, JUL 16 – The RSPCA recorded 982 snake-related incidents last year and warns owners to secure enclosures as loose pet snakes risk native wildlife and require careful care.
- This past week, the RSPCA said `fears incidents could rise again in 2025`, as Essex emerged as the incident hotspot.
- Last year, 383 snake-related reports increased by 18% from 2023, with outdoor escapes risking public safety during summer.
- Five reticulated pythons and a juvenile corn snake were found in North Lincolnshire and Greenwich on July 15, highlighting non-native escapes.
- In 2024, Evie Button, RSPCA senior scientific officer, said, `Our frontline officers are flat out trying to rescue animals`, as over 250 calls about loose snakes have been received in recent months.
- Evie Button said, 'we’re braced for another influx of calls,' urging prospective owners to be fully able to provide for these needs before keeping a snake.
