Summer camp leader admits drugging wife while he sexually assaulted children
Jon Ruben admitted drugging his wife with Temazepam to prevent her waking while he drugged and sexually assaulted children at a Leicestershire summer camp, affecting at least eight victims.
- On Wednesday at Leicester Crown Court, Jon Ruben, 76-year-old former vet and camp operator, pleaded guilty and sobbed after admitting he gave Temazapam to his wife, Susan Ruben, between July 26 and 29 last year so she would not wake while he sexually assaulted the children.
- Evidence shows Ruben ran residential holidays at Stathern Lodge, a venue hosting up to 70 children aged eight to 11, and used a 'sweet game' to administer laced sweets to sedate them.
- Prosecutors said forensic and medical evidence showed Ruben admitted sexual assault of a child under 13, eight counts of child cruelty, and police found more than 50 Category A videos while eight children were hospitalised.
- Judge Timothy Spencer KC warned Ruben at Leicester Crown Court, and Prosecutor Mary Prior KC said Ruben asked police for a voluntary interview when he admitted drugging his wife.
- Leicestershire Police said the owners and operators of Stathern Lodge were independent from those who hire or use the lodge and 'not connected to the incident', and none of the indecent images related to children who were at the summer camp.
