Snow Cover on Greek Mountains Has More than Halved in Four Decades, Study Finds
Researchers found snow cover in Greek mountain ecosystems has declined by nearly 60%, raising concerns for water supplies and downstream rivers.
- Researchers from the University of Cambridge found Greece's mountain snow cover dropped by 58% over the past four decades, threatening water supplies for communities, agriculture, and natural ecosystems during dry summer months.
- Using a new tool called SnowMapper, the team analyzed satellite imagery and climate data to provide daily maps with 100-metre resolution for 10 of Greece's highest mountain formations.
- Since the beginning of the 21st century, the rate of decline has accelerated, with the snow season starting later and ending earlier in locations such as Mount Grammos and Mount Tymfi.
- Co-Authored by Konstantinos Alexopoulos and Professor Ian Willis of the Scott Polar Research Centre, the study received funding from the Bodossaki Foundation, British Antarctic Survey, and National Observatory of Athens.
- Rising winter temperatures mean less snow builds up on the ground, potentially impacting the water supplies that protect against drought during dry summers, illustrating how climate change pressures small water catchments.
