Strength of evidence against man charged with murdering Lyra McKee questioned
Defence says degraded social media footage cannot reliably support the murder case against Paul McIntyre and two co-accused.
On Thursday, Judge Mrs Justice Smyth reserved judgment in the non-jury trial concerning the 2019 murder of journalist Lyra McKee, concluding proceedings at Belfast Crown Court after hearing final defense submissions.
Nine men from Derry have faced 52 charges during the two-year trial, including joint enterprise murder accusations for three defendants stemming from the 2019 riot in Creggan where McKee was fatally shot.
Defense barrister Mark Mulholland KC challenged the prosecution's case as "fragile strands" of "circumstantial" evidence, arguing video footage identifying Paul McIntyre was "degraded" and lacked reliable detail.
While acknowledging police "properly left no stone unturned," Mulholland claimed some officers went "outside their duties" and "lines were crossed," urging acquittal for McIntyre due to witness inconsistencies.
Mrs Justice Smyth thanked counsel for their work in a "very complex case," noting each defendant requires separate consideration, and stated she needs time to properly deliberate before issuing judgment.
