Stolen mobility track chairs returned to Fort Harrison State Park
Indiana conservation officers said the $5,500 reward helped recover the mobility devices, but two Vietnam War-era helmets are still missing.
On Thursday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed two all-terrain track chairs stolen from Fort Harrison State Park were safely returned. The mobility devices, valued at about $25,000 each, help visitors with limited mobility explore rugged terrain.
The chairs were taken during break-ins at six DNR-owned buildings between April 30 and May 1. Indiana Conservation Officers also reported two Vietnam War-era helmets stolen; those items remain missing.
A private donor and the Indy Parks Alliance had offered a $5,500 reward for information leading to recovery. The chairs are part of a 45-device fleet funded by a 2024 Lilly Endowment Grant to expand park access.
Capt. Jet Quillen said, "Track chairs open up incredible opportunities for people with mobility limitations to experience the outdoors." The department expressed gratitude to everyone who provided information ensuring safe return.
While the chairs are back, the theft investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are still seeking tips regarding the missing Vietnam War-era helmets; anyone with information should contact the Indiana Conservation Officers Dispatch Center.
