US Stocks Today: S&P 500, Dow Gain as AI Strength Offsets US-Iran Friction

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.47% on Wednesday while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.06%, as investors balanced renewed US-Iran tensions against strength in technology stocks.
  • Renewed US-Iran tensions fueled fears of broader regional conflict, ending recent calm and reviving inflation concerns as the biggest exchange of fire since July intensified geopolitical risks.
  • Dell shares rose 6.7% after raising annual profit forecasts, while The Magnificent Seven stocks were mixed; Nvidia gained 1.2%, but Microsoft and Tesla each fell 0.5% and one per cent.
  • Markets are pricing in a 66% probability of a September rate hike via the CME FedWatch tool, up from about 37% a week earlier, while the 10-year Treasury yield remains near its highest since January last year.
  • "Investors are very concerned about the upward trend in global bond yields and as a result, are lightening their exposure to equities where they have substantial profits," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research, ahead of Friday's jobs report.
