Minnesota Wildfires: Steward Trail Fire Burns 375 Acres, Closes Highways Just North of Two Harbors
Crews are making water drops and building containment lines as a Red Flag Warning and very high fire danger fuel the blaze, officials said.
The Stewart Trail Fire, first detected Friday near Two Harbors, has burned 376 acres and is 30% contained. Minnesota Incident Command System public information officer Karen Harrison said the fire is "holding" steady.
Minnesota remains under a Red Flag Warning as dry conditions fueled several wildfires across the region Friday. The Minnesota Interagency Fire Center warned of extreme fire danger, with similar weather conditions expected throughout the weekend.
Firefighters are utilizing aircraft for water drops while the structures division clears 50 feet around properties. The fire forced cancellation of all Two Harbors High School activities, including the After Prom event scheduled Saturday.
Highway 61 remains closed in both directions near Two Harbors, and evacuations are in effect for the surrounding area. The Lake County Health Department established a shelter at Sonju Arena, where six people stayed overnight Friday.
Temperatures are expected to be cooler Sunday, with rain potentially assisting crews in containment efforts. A MNICS type 3 incident management team will take over fire management tomorrow to coordinate the ongoing response.
