Stellantis, Dongfeng to form European distribution and production JV
The joint venture will cover sales, engineering and manufacturing, with Voyah EVs built at Stellantis’ Rennes plant to help Dongfeng bypass EU tariffs.
On Wednesday, Stellantis and Dongfeng formed a joint venture to build Dongfeng's Voyah EVs at Stellantis's plant in Rennes, France, bolstering sales as Europe pushes for clean-energy vehicles.
The Rennes facility has operated well below capacity for years as European auto demand remains depressed following Covid; Stellantis announced Tuesday it will build smaller, low-cost electric cars to compete with Chinese models.
Stellantis will lead the joint venture with a 51 percent stake while Dongfeng holds 49 percent, allowing Dongfeng to avoid hefty European tariffs on Chinese EV imports through local production.
CEO Antonio Filosa said the collaboration "leverages the best of Stellantis's global footprint alongside Dongfeng's access to China's advanced new energy vehicles ecosystem," while Dongfeng Chairman Qing Yang noted it unlocks "greater value."
On Thursday, Filosa will outline strategy for the company's 14 brands at an investors' day in Michigan, while the European Commission maintains its target of 90 percent EV sales by 2035.
Chinese cars produced in France, it will soon be a reality. Dong Feng will build one of his models in the Stellantis factory in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine). This is the result of a partnership agreement between Chinese and French manufacturers. Employees see it as good news because it allows the site to restart work.
