Stellantis, Pony.ai to Develop Self-Driving Vehicles in Europe

Pony.ai and Stellantis will test battery-electric vans for robotaxis, aiming for a gradual European rollout starting in 2026, with over 500 robotaxis already operated by Pony.ai globally.

  • Stellantis N.V. and Pony.ai signed a non-binding MoU Friday to accelerate robotaxi deployment across Europe, the companies said.
  • Regional growth and approval hurdles prompted Pony.ai to expand into Europe last year, where local public-road testing builds safety records required by regulatory authorities.
  • Using Stellantis hardware, tests will use Peugeot e-Traveller battery-electric vans on Stellantis' medium-size van AV-Ready Platform, integrating Pony.ai's autonomous driving software for SAE Level 4 autonomy.
  • Short-Term outcomes include safety validation and scaled manufacturing as the partnership combines Stellantis' vehicle platforms with Pony.ai's software to validate performance, safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Given Pony.ai's scale and Stellantis' investment, Ned Curic said `Driverless vehicles have the potential to transform the way people move in our cities, offering safer and more affordable options for communities`, positioning the partnership amid competition from Waymo and WeRide.
