Statistics Canada says country posted $987M merchandise trade deficit in July
- Canada recorded a merchandise trade deficit of $987 million in July, with imports falling due to lower shipments of gold and the B.C. Port strike. Total imports decreased by 5.4%, with a 25.3% drop in imports of metal and non-metallic mineral products. Import of goods from Pacific Rim countries and reliant on B.C. Ports were lower as well.
- Despite the port strike, total exports rose by 0.7% in July. The rise in exports was mainly due to higher exports of canola, aircraft, and transportation equipment and parts. By volume, exports fell by 0.2%.
- The smaller trade deficit in July was unexpected, as analysts had forecasted a larger deficit. The trade report signals a positive start to the third quarter and may help alleviate the impact of slowing trade on the economy.
