Statistics Canada hiring for census jobs across the country
Households and farm businesses will receive questionnaires online, and failure to respond can bring a $500 fine, Statistics Canada said.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, Statistics Canada officially launched the 2026 Census of Population and 2026 Census of Agriculture, mailing invitation letters to households and farm operators across Canada with instructions for mandatory completion.
The federal Statistics Act mandates census participation every five years, with non-compliance penalties reaching up to $1,000 for refusal or $500 for providing false information to ensure accurate data collection.
Seventy-Five per cent of households receive the short-form census while 25 per cent get the long-form version, providing what Chief Statistician Andr Loranger called the 'evidence backbone' for planning hospitals, schools, and infrastructure.
Households and farm operators must complete questionnaires by census day on May 12, 2026; Loranger said responses ensure data needed to support farmers and plan a strong future for all of Canada.
Information collected remains confidential for 92 years before release to Library and Archives Canada, continuing a demographic tradition dating back to New France when Intendant Jean Talon recorded the first Canadian census at 3,215 residents.
