State of Emergency issued for 7 Florida counties due to flooding
The emergency order gives state officials more authority to move resources, close roads and adjust polling sites as heavy rain continues.
On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for seven counties, including Indian River, Martin, and St. Lucie, after torrential rainfall caused widespread flooding across the Treasure Coast.
A broad area of low pressure brought widespread heavy rainfall from October 31 through Monday, with meteorologists reporting 8-to-14 inches along the Interstate 95 corridor in Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, and Port St. Lucie.
Indian River County schools and district offices will remain closed Tuesday as flooding renders 58th Avenue between 13th Street and 17th Street impassable due to a washout.
With Election Day on Tuesday, St. Lucie County relocated precincts 39 and 52 to Lakewood Park Church, while Martin County moved Grace Presbyterian Church operations to its Supervisor of Elections Office.
Executive Order 26-227 remains in effect for 60 days, activating state resources and price-gouging protections. Authorities warn that 12 inches of moving water can carry a vehicle away.
