Burn Ban to Be Lifted for All NC Counties, Forest Service Says
Burn permits will be available statewide as improved precipitation lowers fire danger, while restrictions near occupied dwellings remain in place.
The North Carolina Forest Service lifted the open burn ban for the final 19 counties effective 8 a.m. Friday, following recent rainfall that moderated fire danger statewide.
Officials implemented the statewide ban on March 28 due to hazardous forest fire conditions, having already lifted restrictions for 81 counties on Sunday, May 3.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler noted that while precipitation improved fire danger in the Piedmont and Triad, the state still has "a long way to go with drought recovery."
Burn permits are available statewide as of Friday, though the lifting does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling.
Local fire marshals retain authority to issue or lift burn bans within that 100-foot distance, and officials advise residents to consult N.C. Forest Service county rangers for safe burning guidance.
