Starmer to allow all pubs to stay open until 5am for England’s World Cup match with Mexico
The blanket extension covers pubs in England and Wales, with officials saying up to 1 million extra pints could be sold, the British Beer and Pub Association said.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a blanket licensing extension allowing pubs across England and Wales to remain open until 5am for Monday's 1am World Cup match against Mexico.
England's victory over DR Congo on Wednesday confirmed the 1am kick-off, rendering standard licensing laws insufficient since they require ten days' notice for temporary extensions.
While the British Beer and Pub Association welcomed the move, Access Hospitality data shows 85% of UK hospitality establishments face staffing challenges, leaving many venues closed despite the extension.
Police leaders Mark Roberts and Scott Green of the National Police Chiefs' Council criticized the late announcement, warning it forces officers to work extended shifts that divert resources from communities.
Starmer stated the policy aims to unite communities during the World Cup, with estimates suggesting up to one million extra pints could be sold as the fixture drives high street footfall.
