Starbucks international business disappoints but U.S. stores outperform
Comparable U.S. sales rose 7.7% as Starbucks benefited from refreshed stores and strong autumn menu items, beating its own growth forecast.
Starbucks is set to report quarterly earnings after the bell on Thursday, with Wall Street projecting revenue of $9.23 billion and earnings per share of 72 cents.
Shares of Starbucks have climbed about 24% this year, raising its market cap to roughly $119 billion following strong sales growth in the previous quarter.
To improve performance, Starbucks plans to shutter about 250 cafes, representing about 1% of its North American footprint, expecting about $300 million in restructuring charges.
The upcoming report follows Starbucks' recent move to quash speculation regarding a potential acquisition of Chipotle Mexican Grill, where CEO Brian Niccol previously served.
Analysts expect Starbucks to post a same-store sales increase of 6%, according to StreetAccount estimates, positioning the company for a fifth straight quarter of growth.
