Gout Gout Wins 100 Meters at Australian Junior Track Titles but Misses National Record
The 18-year-old ran 10.19 seconds in his heat and said he has more in the tank as he targets a legal sub-10 mark.
On Friday, 18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout qualified fastest for Saturday's 100-meter semifinals at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships in Brisbane, clocking 10.19 seconds with a 0.3m/s tailwind.
Last week at the National Championships, Gout set an under-20 world record of 19.67 seconds in the 200-meter final, surpassing Usain Bolt's previous mark from 2004.
Olympic champion Justin Gatlin disparaged Gout's record as a "fake," citing favorable conditions, while Gout responded: "There's always going to be haters. If there's haters, it means you are doing something right."
Gout aims to become the third Australian to run under 10 seconds legally during Saturday's finals, stating he is "on track" to beat his personal best of 10.00 set in February.
With eyes on Los Angeles 2028, Gout is targeting Australia's first Olympic sprinting gold medal; he grew up in Queensland, where he completed high school late last year.
