Star Citizen Crosses $1 Billion in Crowdfunding as Chris Roberts Eyes Version 1.0
The milestone follows a $5,000 limited ship sale and comes as CIG says Squadron 42 is in the closing stages of development.
- Star Citizen reached its $1 billion crowdfunding milestone on May 24 during the DefenseCon in-game event, raising $6,624,741 in a single hour as the $5,000 Anvil Odin spaceship went on sale.
- Over 14 years of crowdfunding, Star Citizen has been called a scam by skeptics questioning whether it will ever launch, yet the Anvil Odin closes out the final vehicle stretch goals from the project's earliest days.
- The Anvil Aerospace Odin battlecruiser measures 752m long, 222m wide, and 213m tall, designed for crews of 33 to 65+ players, and required applicants to write essays explaining their interest before joining the Odin Founders Club.
- Players confirmed purchases on Star Citizen's subreddit, with one customer posting 'I just bought a $5,000 ODIN Jpeg, AMA,' receiving the response 'My condolences,' while CIG stated pledge ships will be earnable through gameplay.
- Squadron 42, the single-player spinoff led by CIG chief Chris Roberts and starring Mark Hamill alongside Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, and Mark Strong, launches this year in closing development stages, positioning Star Citizen for full release in 2027 or 2028.
