Stansted passengers warned of SIX-HOUR queues at popular holiday destination
Ryanair says the new biometric border system is causing six-hour waits and missed flights, and wants Portugal to delay the rollout until September.
Ryanair has called on the Portuguese Government to pause the EES rollout until September, citing system failures and inadequate staffing that have forced passengers to endure hours-long passport control queues during peak summer travel.
Travelers face severe delays at Portuguese airports, with reports of 6-hour waits in Lisbon and Faro. Faro International Airport now processes 9M+ passengers in summer despite being built for 4M, compounding bottlenecks.
A travel advisor noted that Porto is 40% faster through EES than Lisbon and advised families with children under 12 to request the assisted lane, which could reduce wait times to around 30 minutes.
Greek authorities clarified that EES suspension is permitted only during high-traffic periods at specific entry points, not blanket pauses. Greece backtracked on earlier promises that British travelers would be exempt from biometric checks.
Nearly 59% of UK holidaymakers expect delays linked to the new system, while airlines including Jet2 have joined Ryanair in calling for a suspension to allow a 'smoother airport experience' during peak season.
