Anselm was born into a wealthy family in the town of Aosta (Piedmont) in 1033. At the age of 27, in 1060 he joined the Benedictines at Le Bec, in northern France, where the famous scholar, Blessed Lanfranc, was abbot. When Lanfranc became abbot of Caen in 1063, his successor, Herluin, appointed Anselm prior of Le Bec.
