Sri Lanka Cyclone Caused $4.1 Bn Damage: World Bank
Cyclone Ditwah caused over 640 deaths and displaced 66,000 people, with relief groups providing medical aid and shelter as recovery continues nearly a month later.
- Earlier this year, Cyclone Ditwah made landfall in Sri Lanka, causing floods, dam breaches, and landslides that killed over 640 and displaced more than 66,000, with recovery ongoing.
- A Dec 11 WWA analysis found the storms were supercharged by higher sea temperatures and rapid deforestation, while residents of Halmulla and central Colombo said floods usually occur in July, making the timing unusual.
- Homes and tools were damaged locally in Halmulla as villagers reported water rising to 1.8m within 50 hours, ruining three carpentry machines, with two beyond repair.
- On Dec 20 the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society opened a medical camp in Halmulla serving about 140 beneficiaries, distributing about 40 baby kits, while the Singapore Red Cross sent a team of four responders and appealed for donations until Jan 31.
- Recovery remains slow almost a month after landfall with damaged homes, lost livelihoods and disease risks such as dengue, while the floods are part of recent weeks of climate-driven disasters in Asia.
