Spokane County Sheriff's Sergeant dies in traffic incident
SPOKANE COUNTY, WASHINGTON, AUG 9 – The sergeant was struck by a motorcyclist while removing a hay bale blocking traffic, with the motorcyclist seriously injured but expected to recover, officials said.
- During a traffic-hazard response Saturday, a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was killed when a motorcycle collided with his patrol vehicle.
- Sgt. Riddell reported a circular hay bale fell off a vehicle near milepost 7, prompting Salas to assist a trucker on eastbound I-90 near Four Lakes, when he was struck by a motorcyclist.
- Riddell said Salas was rushed to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, after an approaching motorcyclist failed to observe emergency lights and struck him.
- In a gesture of respect, Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered all flags at city facilities flown at half-staff through Monday.
- Amid ongoing investigation, it remains unclear if any charges will be filed, as Riddell said it’s uncertain whether charges will follow.
