It is high time for the designated German head of government and his team to start work

CDU and CSU were pleased with the positive SPD member vote on the coalition agreement. Federal Chancellor-designate Merz wrote on Platform X that this was the right decision for our country. The broad agreement shows that the political centre is capable of action and takes responsibility.

On Wednesday, Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) announced that it had received the approval of its members to work together in a ruling coalition with the conservatives CDU/CSU. The coalition, dubbed black and red after the parties' colors, will be led by conservative Friedrich Merz. The right-wing cabinet is already clear, while the names of the left-wing ministers have not yet been officially confirmed, but are already being discussed.

The SPD agrees with the coalition with the Union. However, many members are increasingly resigned – so they need to be involved in order to revitalize the party's content.

According to CSU and CDU, the SPD has also voted in favour of the coalition agreement. Around 85 percent of the members voted in favour, with 56 percent of the participation. The SPD leadership sees "great backing from the base".[more]]>

A clear majority of the SPD members questioned are in favour of an alliance with CDU and CSU. For the co-party chairman Lars Klingbeil this is probably a relief.
