Spanberger names Medicare official to lead new digital team
The new team will review technology purchases and fix public services after Virginia said a failed IT project cost taxpayers $52 million.

- Spanberger proposed the initiative after her administration claimed the state lost $52 million on a failed IT project involving a child support system overhaul under former Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
- Fletcher previously led the digital service team at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and began her federal tenure in 2021 with the U.S. Digital Service, working in health IT policy and artificial intelligence governance.
- The team will review state technology contracts to prevent waste and assist agencies in managing impacts from federal funding cuts to programs including healthcare and SNAP benefits.
- Other states have successfully employed similar digital teams; Colorado's group negotiated a grant-management system covering 17 programs and more than $60 million in annual grants before committing funds.
