Spain reckons with second deadly train crash of the year ahead of national election

  • On Thursday, families searched for missing loved ones more than 24 hours after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, killing at least 69 and injuring about 180 people.
  • This marks the second high-speed rail disaster this year; a January collision in southern Spain killed 46 people, despite the network operating safely for three decades prior.
  • In Castilla-La Mancha, more than 2,000 volunteers assisted survivors, while residents of Urda provided food and transportation for passengers from the town of about 2,500 people south of Madrid.
  • Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told reporters the government is working to "shed light on the tragedy, and strengthen security so that this never happens again." Construction worker David Gómez described helping survivors escape through train windows.
  • Desperate for information, relatives flooded social media with photos and seat numbers to locate missing passengers, while actor César Vicente traveled 495 kilometers from Seville to Toledo searching for his father.
