SpaceX Pursues 5G-Level Connectivity with Starlink Mobile V2 Expansion
Starlink Mobile and Deutsche Telekom will provide 5G satellite connectivity to over 140 million subscribers across 10 European countries starting in 2028.
- At Mobile World Congress, Deutsche Telekom and Starlink announced a partnership to deploy V2 technology in Europe, posted on X on March 2, 2026.
- To fill coverage gaps, the companies note that satellite-to-mobile will complement terrestrial 5G by addressing areas where expansion is complex due to topography or constraints, with compatible smartphones auto-switching to Starlink's satellite network when terrestrial coverage is unavailable.
- Starlink's V2 design features larger phased-array antennas and laser interlinks acting as `cell towers in space` that deliver up to 100 times the data density and peak speeds of 150 Mbps per user, Starlink said.
- The deal extends satellite coverage to more than 140 million Deutsche Telekom subscribers across 10 countries, and Starlink Mobile says it will bring reliable connectivity to millions.
- Looking to the near future, the rollout depends on SpaceX's Starship launches starting mid-2027 with more than 50 satellites per launch, targeting full deployment in six months and spectrum closing Nov. 30, 2027.
