Samajwadi Party MPs, who had been protesting in the Parliament complex over the alleged ‘chadhawa chori’ controversy, collected donations in a symbolic donation box during the Monsoon Session. On the final day, the party said ₹2,15,490, along with two silver coins, had been collected. The MPs subsequently took the money to a Hanuman temple in Delhi and deposited it, obtaining an official receipt. The MPs said the contribution was meant to send a message that devotees’ offerings should be protected. Temple representatives confirmed receiving the cash and silver coins. While the MPs maintained that the temple visit was not political, the development carries a clear political message, particularly with Uttar Pradesh elections approaching. The ‘chadhawa chori’ issue had remained a prominent Opposition attack on the government throughout the Parliament session.
Akhilesh Yadav arrived at the Parliament complex on Wednesday with a sack, a donation box, milk, and a bottle of water. SP MPs reported that so far, 157,000 rupees in donations have been collected in Parliament during the Ram Mandir issue. During the protest, SP MP Dimple Yadav said, "These people used to talk about Sanatan Dharma, but they have committed theft in the name of faith."
